June 10, 2007 Pisa and Lucca, Italy

Posted by on June 10, 2007

Next up is the search for the mythical Leaning Tower of Pisa. We could see it from the distance, but it was nowhere to be found once we got into town. I asked the hotel desk for directions and they said we couldn’t miss it, but we had a hell of a time finding it. It turns out we should have followed the tour buses, because it was the most touristy thing we’ve seen all trip. The tower and adjacent cathedral were absolutely beautiful.

We spent the night at Villa Albergo Marta. It  was gorgeous – at the foot of the mountains in between Pisa and Lucca. It is recommended as the most romantic hotel in the area by Conde Nast and it was my big splurge this trip.

Lucca is a medieval city that is surrounded by incredibly thick walls. The top of the wall is so thick, you can walk and bike around the top. We ate wood-fired pizza in the town square. I’ve never so much pizza and pasta in my life!
