October 3, 2010 Hong Kong, China

Posted by on October 3, 2010

We explored Kowloon today. Although Kowloon feels more authentic, it definitely has more street people and hawkers. Let’s just say I’ve had lots of offers for hand bags and watches.

I read that everyone should experience Chungking Mansions once. We found foul smelling food stalls, lots of knock-off electronics, and shady men standing around. Yuen Po Street Bird Market was a lot of fun – mostly old men bring their birds in elaborate cages. The Flower Market had super cheap gorgeous flowers. We ate lunch at the nicest Pizza Hut I’ve ever been to. We had to wait for a table along with people in suits and ties. The menu had escargot and creme brulee, but no breadsticks.

I didn’t feel particularly out of place in Hong Kong. There were many Westerners and lots of restaurants and shops catering to foreigners, particularly on Hong Kong island.
