October 7, 2010 Phuket, Thailand

Posted by on October 7, 2010

We have spent the last 2 days exploring the island. I chose to stay in Rawai, on the southern tip of the island, because it’s very central to most major areas. Rawai is about 15 minutes from Phuket town, 10 minutes from Karon and Kata, and 20 minutes from Patong. It rained on and off for the rest of our stay, so we rented a car. I had planned on renting scooters, but after seeing the crazy traffic I’m really glad we didn’t.

We drove everywhere – Karon, Kata, Patong, Phuket town, Wat Chalong, the Big Buddha, Baen Pa Waterfall, Gibbon Rehabilitation Center, and several malls. I am not ashamed to say that we had two great meals at the Sizzler. Traffic is unbelievable – bicycles, scooters with 3 people, scooters with a family of 7 in a sidecar, trucks delivering huge tanks – all sharing 1.5 lanes with no curbs. It was insane!

Child safety experts would flip out – kids sit of the back of scooters, stand in the front, or sit in sidecars without shoes or helmets.

Dogs are everywhere. The lay in the middle of the street and around stores. They’re obviously well-fed, but I’m not sure who they belong to. People even take their dogs on their scooters!
