Our driving itinerary today includes several of Iceland’s most famous sites – Geysir Geothermal Area, Gullfoss waterfall, and Thingvellir National Park. These three sites are commonly called Iceland’s Golden Circle. Many people tour this area as a day trip out of Iceland, but we left the Snaefellsnes Peninsula this morning and are staying at a cabin in Fludir tonight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our first stop was Thingvellir National Park, which is where the North American and Eurasian tetonic plates meet. We had fun hiking the rift valley between the plates. Another 20 minutes down the road was Geysir Geothermal Area with boiling mud pits and exploding geysers. I’ve never been to Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I did think the eruption would be longer, so we had to wait for another to take a picture. About 10 minutes away was Gullfoss, a wide multi-level waterfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
