Isla Mujeres, Mexico August 18, 2016

Posted by on August 18, 2016

We took the ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres today. We hopped on the bus which stops right in front of Beach Palace and took it to Puerto Juarez from where the ferry departs. The bus is 10.50 pesos each way (60 cents) versus a taxi which is around $40 each way. I always like to take public transportation when we travel, but I’m not sure if my family agrees!

The ferry only takes about 15 minutes and we rented a golf cart for $26 USD for 2 hours. We zipped around the island and visited the Turtle Farm, a government-run hatchery for endangered sea turtles. You can purchase food but I think they were full by the time we got there in the afternoon.

We also drove to Punta Sur, a gorgeous point stretching into the ocean with a sculpture garden, souvenir shops, and scenic overlooks.

Before we returned the cart, we drove past an abandoned airfield with a deserted control tower inhabited by dozens of iguanas. We raced the golf cart down the runway and climbed up the tower.
