San Jose and Monterey, California June 18, 2023

Posted by on June 18, 2023

We’re making our way south from the Russian River Valley to Los Angeles. Our first stop was the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose. Sara Winchester, the widow of the Winchester gun heir, lost her mother, father-in-law, and husband within a few months and inherited a huge fortune. She did not have any children and moved to California for a better climate to improve her health. She purchased a two-story, eight room house on 45 acres in 1886 with plans to expand the house. At the time of her death in 1922, the house had 160 rooms, 2,000 doors, 10,000 windows, 47 stairways, 47 fireplaces, 13 bathrooms, and 6 kitchens. There are stairs that lead nowhere, doors that open to plain walls, and a maze-like floor plan.

We’re overnighting in Monterey. The beach is absolutely gorgeous, but the water is very cold!
