Cinque Terre, Italy May 3, 2024
We took the train from Sestri Levante to Monterosso al Mare, the closest Cinque Terre village, and ate lunch, then the ferry and train to Riomaggiore, Manarola, and Vernazza. I thought we might walk the trail between two of the towns, but it looked like more of a hike than a simple walk. The towns … Continue reading
Sestri Levante, Italy May 1, 2024
I chose Sestri Levante as our base for exploring the Italian Riviera. It has great beaches on the Mediterranean, oceanfront hotels and restaurants, and lots of gelato. The weather is beautiful – sunny and 70 – but it’s fairly quiet since it’s still spring. You can tell the shops, restaurants, and beach clubs are getting … Continue reading
Jerez and Seville, Spain April 29, 2024
We spent last night in Jerez at the Royal Andalusian School for Equestrian Arts, where they train the famous Andalusian horses. The grounds of the school were beautiful. Today we explored Setas de Seville, Plaza Espana, and the Cathedral in Seville. On to the Italian Riviera tomorrow!
Ronda, Spain April 28, 2024
We drove to Ronda, the most famous Pueblo Blanco in Andalucia. There are many photos of their famous bridge at the top of the gorge. We drove down a crazy narrow and steep road to the bottom of the gorge – we weren’t sure if the rental car was going to make it back up … Continue reading
Arcos de la Frontera, Spain April 27, 2024
We’re in Arcos de la Frontera, one of Andalucia’s Pueblos Blancos (White Villages). Our apartment was a former pub, and the view across the valley from the two balconies is gorgeous. We’re attending the MotoGP race in Jerez, one of the most attended races in the series, and ADLF is the perfect base for sightseeing … Continue reading
Tallinn, Estonia October 4, 2023
We took a 2 hour ferry across the Baltic Sea from Helsinki to Tallinn for the day. The ferry was really new with bars, a kid’s play area, 2 car decks, buffet, cafeteria, and cabins. Tallinn’s Old Town was very close to the pier and easy to explore on foot. Some of the buildings date … Continue reading
Helsinki, Finland October 4, 2023
We arrived early on the ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki, so we dropped our bags at the hotel and explored Helsinki on foot. We headed down to the waterfront and found a fish market and farmer’s market with food from all over the world. Their American stands had donuts and BBQ. Licorice is a really … Continue reading
Stockholm, Sweden September 28, 2023
Stockholm has been a beautiful, welcoming city. We stayed at Hobo Hotel near the central station, but spent most of our time in Gamla Stan, the Old City. It had beautiful cobblestone streets, narrow alleys, cafes and restaurants that spilled into the streets, and great shopping. We took a walking Ghost Tour of Gamla Stan, … Continue reading
Helginor and Hillerod, Denmark September 25, 2023
We took a day trip out of Copenhagen today. I purchased a 48-hour Copenhagen Card which includes unlimited admission to several sights and travel on public transportation. We took the train Copenhagen to Helsignor (55 minutes) and then walked to Kronborg Castle, the setting of Hamlet. The castle was 10 minutes by foot from the … Continue reading
Copenhagen, Denmark September 24, 2023
We sailed overnight from Oslo to Copenhagen. The ferry reminded me of a Carnival cruise ship except you could bring your car onboard. We departed Oslo at 4pm and arrived in Copenhagen at 10am the following morning. We dropped our bags at the hotel and took a sightseeing cruise of Copenhagen’s canals. The city looks … Continue reading
